Postural Assessments

Posture is important to emotional and physical health. It has been overlooked too long. Most people learn about posture as “Stand up straight”, or “Stop slouching”.

Unfortunately much greater negative effect from poor posture than just not “looking our best”.
Real clinical syndromes associated with certain posture profiles.
We will address some of them during our workshop.
For the purpose of this workshop we will be looking at the posture profiles from 2 categories namely:
1. Descending posture profiles (from the head downward) and
2. Ascending posture profiles (from the hips upwards)

When evaluating posture, we look for:

  • Symmetry front to back.
  • Symmetry side to side.
  • Deviations from optimum

We are looking for changes in symmetry.
(Is the head tilted? Are the shoulders level? Is the belt line straight? Is the head in front, or behind the center of the shoulder?)

Posture plays an important role in a person’s overall health. It is generally an indicator, not a condition. Because “normal” posture has been clearly defined over the years, poor posture can be an indication of muscle imbalance, or compensatory changes in the spine. Spinal screenings may be a valuable tool in assessing a person’s overall health.

Posture can be divided into 2 profiles:
Descending Posture Profile: Forward Head Posture
Ascending: The hip complex

There are many:
Joints affected
Muscles involved
